Protests escalate all over Pakistan following arrest of former prime minister Imran Khan May 9th

Protests by Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) party supporters have escalated in multiple areas in Pakistan as paramilitary personnel from the Pakistan Rangers arrested former prime minister Imran Khan while he was sitting in court. Khan was arrested by rangers in connection with a corruption case.

After Khan arrest, protests have been reported in Islamabad as well as Faisalabad, Gujranwala, Karachi, Lahore, Mardan, Multan, Peshawar, Quetta, and Rawalpindi, with police clashing with protesters in multiple locations. “This is very serious now … I don’t think these protests will stop because PTI already said that Imran Khan is a red line.”

In Lahore, protesters stormed the Army Corps Commander’s residence in the Cantonment area, vandalizing the property. Protesters have also stormed the army headquarters in Rawalpindi.

Several people have died and thousands of supporters of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) party have been arrested.

On 10th May, court has granted bail to Pakistan’s former prime minister Imran Khan for two weeks in a corruption case and ordered his protection from arrest on any charges until Monday, amid concerns that he would be immediately rearrested on his release.
