Pakistan Independence Day (14 August)

Pakistanis are celebrating 74th independence day on Sunday with traditional excitement and national spirit. Muslim of sub continent fought to be free of British rule and later re-armed to battle for their own nation-state (Pakistan). After the British put down the Indian Rebellion of 1857, the Crown assumed full control during the British Raj period. This lasted until Pakistan’s independence in 1947. The Mountbatten Plan split Pakistan (comprised of West and East Pakistan) from India, creating an independent Muslim nation. This day is an occasion to promote patriotism and national unity. Independence Day is a public holiday. It is a day off for the general population, and schools and most businesses are closed.

Events/arrangements held on Independence day

  • 31 guns salute will be presented in the Federal Capital Islamabad and 21 guns salute in the Provincial Capital Lahore
  • changing guards will be held at Mazar-e-Quaid and Allama Iqbal Tomb
  • National Flag will be waved on government, private buildings, houses
  • the markets and streets will be decorated with colorful buntings
  • flag hoisting and Punjab Police march will be held at the garden of the Municipal Committee in Jahania
  • buildings will be decorated with colorful lights
