The Multan Clock Tower, or Ghanta Ghar, was constructed in 1884 AD during the British Raj in South Asia. British needed offices to manage the city when the Municipal Act of 1883 was passed. On February 12th, 1884, work on Multan’s Ghanta Ghar officially began. It took four years to complete. It was built atop the remains of Ahmad Khan Sadozai’s Haveli, which was totally destroyed during the Siege of Multan.
In honor of Ripon, the viceroy of India at the time, the hall and structure were given the names “Ripon Hall and Ripon Building.” Northbrook, a previous viceroy of India (1872–1876), inspired the name of the clock tower, which is now known as Northbrook Tower.
This structure was finished in 1888. Hall was given the name Jinnah Hall following Pakistan’s 1947 declaration of independence.
