Patients’ Welfare Association is a non-governmental, non-political organization, which is run solely by the students of Dow Medical College, working in the premises of Dr. Ruth K. M. Pfau, Civil Hospital Karachi. It was founded in 1979 by three compassionate students of Dow Medical College and since then, it has been providing high-quality healthcare services to deserving patients, with a yearly budget of around Rs. 150 Million.

OUR MISSION
Here at PWA, our mission is:
• Bridging the gap between the services provided at Dr.Ruth K.M. Pfau Civil Hospital, Karachi and the needs of the patients.
• Rendering “free of cost services” whether it be medications or screened blood provision, with no compromise on quality.
• Catering to the needs of Thalassemia patients.
The basic idea of this empathy-driven mission is transcribed in our motto:

OUR SERVICES
PWA provides two services, completely free of cost:
Blood Transfusion Services:
PWA’s Voluntary Blood Bank, established under Blood Transfusion Services is registered by the Sindh Blood Transfusion Authority (SBTA). It is the largest single-outlet blood bank in the country, with a daily dispatch of around 150 to 200 blood bags. Following the guidelines of WHO, these blood bags are screened for the five parameters i.e. Hepatitis B Virus, Hepatitis C Virus, HIV, Malaria, and Syphilis, using the Chemiluminescent immunoassays (CLIA) technique to ensure the safety of our patients.
Thalassemia Services:
Currently, around 220 registered Thalassemia patients are being managed by PWA’s Thalassemia Daycare Centre, under the supervision of a Consultant Hematologist. These patients are provided with regular, screened blood transfusions, viral markers, screening, baseline investigations, iron chelation therapy, and other medications completely free of cost.
