Red Fort (Urdu: لال قلعہ) also known as Muzaffarabad Fort, is a 17th-century fort located in Muzaffarabad, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Pakistan. It was built by the Chak rulers of Kashmir. The local people called this fort as the ‘Rutta Qila’ or just ‘Qila’. Is is a historical building and heritage within city. The fort has spectacular view, one side is covered with mountains and the other side is river bank.
Erathquake 2005 and Restoration?
Rutta Qila suffered significant damage from the 2005 Kashmir earthquake. The fort’s western section is severely damaged, and the northern section is completely gone, leaving just terraces behind. The earthquake has a significant impact on the entire structure. The ancient historic Red Fort Muzaffarabad and other Azad Jammu and Kashmir historical landmarks will be preserved and restored according to a recent agreement between the Azad Jammu and Kashmir government and the Lahore Walled City Authority (LWCA).
How to get there?
The distance between Muzaffarabad City and Red Fort Muzaffarabad is 20 minutes by car. Red Fort Muzaffarabad is 4.9 kilometers away and can be reached in 16 minutes when traveling on Neelam Road. While traveling 6.3 kilometers, it takes 16 minutes to complete the Tariqabad Bypass and 17 minutes to complete the Tanga Adda Road. The Red Fort is 209.9 kilometres away from Islamabad, and the trip there via the Hazara Motorway/M-15 takes 3 hours and 56 minutes. Visitors and tourists can also use the public transportation system.
