Lady Dufferin Hospital Karachi

Lady Dufferin Hospital is located in Karachi and it is the largest women’s hospital in Pakistan. The Hospital was constructed to meet the needs of the women of India who were prepared to die rather than receive treatment in general hospitals in the presence of male patients. When Queen Victoria was informed of the plight of these women, she asked Lady Hariot Dufferin, the wife of the Viceroy of India at that time, to help find a solution. She decided to establish hospitals exclusively for women and children. She appealed to the local philanthropists to donate to the Dufferin Fund in order to build these hospitals. It was made possible by a generous donation by renowned philanthropist Mr. Eduljee Dinshaw in 1894. Its foundation stone was laid by Lady Elgin, the wife of Viceroy Lord Elgin. It was built in 1898 and was named in memory of Lady Dufferin. The Hospital is one of the oldest of the Subcontinent. The Lady Dufferin Hospital is not just a multipart edifice. Nor is it just an institution. It depicts a culture of care, maternal care at that, which is an integral part of each one of us. The distinguishing feature of the Lady Dufferin is the quality of care provided to the patients irrespective of their financial status. Benazir Bhutto, the former Prime Minister of Pakistan, gave birth to a son Bilawal Bhutto Zardari in the hospital in 1988.

Today, the Lady Dufferin Hospital has a capacity of 300 beds with 4 operation theatres, prenatal & postnatal wards, ultrasound department, neo-natal intensive care unit, labor room, consulting rooms, private &semi-private rooms, outpatient department (OPD), family planning services, 24 hour laboratory, radiology and pharmacy.
